For use with Growl

GrowlHUD

In a quest for a more subtle Max OS X-style notification design for Growl I noticed how well the HUD:s in various Apple applications (such as iPhoto editing) work. They are dark and do not steal too much attention, they look good in the system as a general and they are designed to display information.

GrowlHUD also includes support for priorities.

Installation

If you have Growl installed, double-click on the GrowlHUD icon to install the notification style.

Based on user feedback this release contains fixes for:

HI. I really like your concept and execution.
I just have one small suggestion, the text isn’t quite as clear/vivid as it could be. Take a look at the ‘AboveTheNight” growl display. It you could incorporate that text into GrowlHUD, i think it would look absolutely perfect. Thanks for all your work. And thanks for making growl better!

Love the styles, really do - thank you for the work on them! Out of curiosity, what determines the priority level of the messages, and is there any way to toggle the displaying of the stripes for priority? Thanks again for your hard work.

    Thank you!
Both GrowlHUD and AboveTheNight use white Lucida Grande at the same size as font faces. Though it is probably the font smoothing in Mac OS X that combined with text-shadow in GrowlHUD highlights fewer pixels.

Thank you! In a few applications you can control the priority, but most of the time you have to open System Preferences › Growl and then go to the Applications pane and select your application where you want to modify priorities. Select Messages and you can see the drop down menu to set priorities.

So. It seems to be some kind of incompatibility between disk images created with Disk Utility version 10.5.8 (198.16) (this is what it says when I check it after downloading from the link above: interaktion.info/unpublished/growlhud-diskutility.png) and the Disk Utility that is in 10.5.1. Unfortunately I have no way of creating a disk image in Leopard since I am still on Tiger.

I am sorry for your inconvenience. As a temporary measure I have a zipped version with no disk image here: interaktion.info/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/growlhud.zip.

Are there any Leopard users out there willing to lend a hand in debugging the .dmg?

  20. Jim Says:

Niklas - Contact me via email. I’d be happy to create a Leopard compatible disk image for you that will work on Tiger too.
